Samantha shows up to my room wearing a displeased expression. At first, I was worried that she knew what happened last night. Her anger isn't at all in response to the shameful moments I've been sharing with her dad. She shoves a box of black hair dye in my hand, telling me I have to do something about my roots before the party. I laugh in both relief and at the ridiculousness of it all. “Don't worry, I'll take care of it.”

“Good. If you need help, I'll be in my room getting ready.”

“I've dyed my hair by myself before. I'll be fine.”

“Okay. Well, if you need me for anything at all, don't hesitate to ask.”

“I won't. I promise.”

She smiles and takes me by surprise by kissing my mouth. “I'll see you at the party, then.”

I close the door behind her, sighing in relief. I'm not sure there's any point in locking the door, but I do it anyway. If someone wants to get in, they will, no matter what. Zacharias came in last night with little effort.

Once I'm one step closer to being the perfect man again, I shower and wash off all the dye from my skin. I don't take long soaking under the water and I dry off as soon as I get out of the shower, wrapping a towel around my waist. I walk toward the suit waiting for me on the bed. It's navy and more fitting than the one I had on yesterday. I hate it. I don't like wearing any of them. The material is too heavy and constricting. I suck at putting on a tie.

Every time I had to wear one in the past, Matt would suggest I buy a clip on, so I didn't have to keep asking for his help. I swear I'm all thumbs. “Allow me,” a deep voice says from behind me. I jump where I stand, not noticing Zacharias in the mirror before. I was too focused on looking perfect for tonight. I didn't even hear the bedroom door open. His hands come to the front of my body and he adjusts my tie. The way the man's hands move so quickly, I swear he could do this in his sleep.

“There. Perfect. The baby blue really brings out your eyes.”

“Thank you. I should really learn to do it myself.”

“Then I won't be able to do it for you.” He winks.

“I have a feeling you enjoy being needed way too much.”

“Only by you.” He tucks my tie down in my coat, rubbing my stomach. “You fixed your hair?”

“I did. Your daughter made sure of it.”

“I prefer the blond.”

“It makes me stand out too much.”

“Maybe that's why I like it. Everyone looks the same around here. The suits, dark hair, dark eyes, the stiff and serious expressions. Then there's you, offering me a new change in scenery.” He smiles, stroking my cheek with the pad of his thumb. My bottom lip trembles and I shove my hands in my pockets, more worried than before about not blending in.
